Wheatgrass
‘a daily green sunlight transfusion’
Viktoras Kulvinskas
With all the environmental toxins our bodies are exposed to in this modern world, wheatgrass provides a powerful juice full of cleansing and rejuvenating properties. It’s packed full of vitamins, minerals, enzymes and essential amino acids. This makes it a complete or ‘super’ food. In conjunction with the right diet and moderate exercise, wheatgrass juice can play a vital role in detoxifying and rebuilding the body to its full potential.
It is important to realize, however, that wheatgrass will not make a diet high in poor quality and processed foods any less damaging to long and short term health. Trying to gain the benefits of wheatgrass juice without taking on a complementary diet and lifestyle is next to useless. In case you were wondering, there is no ‘wheat’ in wheatgrass, one is a grain and the other is a green vegetable.
Detoxifying Properties
Wheatgrass juice is comprised of around 70% chlorophyll, a known blood cleanser. Scientific studies into the molecular structure of chlorophyll have recognized its similarity to that of hemoglobin, the basic building block of human blood.
This fundamental similarity has led scientists to believe that, like hemoglobin, the chlorophyll consumed in wheatgrass facilitates the transportation of oxygen to the body’s cells, effectively allowing them to better perform one of their most essential duties: cell detoxification. Furthermore, wheatgrass contains a multitude of nutrients, which assist in the detoxifying and rebuilding process. These include saponin, an agent that works like a detergent to assist your body in eliminating excess mucus, and with it toxins, from your system.
Be prepared to experience cleansing reactions such as headache and nausea after consuming the juice. This is a natural reaction to the toxins that have been drawn from body tissue into the bloodstream. This reaction means that those toxins are on their way out. More violent reactions such as vomiting and diarrhea are a result of the same process, but are an indication that you should reduce your dosage, and continue on.
When our bodies become laden with toxicity our life force is threatened. This evokes the body’s restorative powers. Usually this manifests as an acute illness, such as a cold (discharge of toxicity) and/or a fever (the incineration of toxicity). These cleansing reactions rid the body of waste matter. They are survival mechanisms and should not be suppressed.
If one does suppress and override the signals, the toxicity has no chance to escape and will continue to accumulate. A consequence of this may be serious chronic disease. Acute cleansing reactions are a signs of impending good health. Once the toxins have passed through the system, health will improve.
Rebuilding Properties
Many of the properties, which make wheatgrass such a great tool for detoxifying the body also contribute to its capacity as a cell rebuilder. Freshly squeezed wheatgrass juice boasts up to 92 of the 102 minerals found in soil. It also contains vitamins C, E, the B group, carotene and the full compliment of essential amino acids. An important health giving quality of wheatgrass juice, however, is that it is a rich source of 30 enzymes. Enzymes provide the life force of all living things but are destroyed by cooking, processing or prolonged exposure to air. The consumption of living enzymes, through wheatgrass juice and raw organic foods, supports the body’s own enzymic capacity to detoxify and rebuild healthy cells.
The holistic impact of wheatgrass is well described by Viktoras Kulvinskas M.S.: “in therapeutic amounts, wheatgrass juice will detoxify the body by increasing the elimination of hardened mucous, crystallized acids and solidified, decaying fecal matter. It’s high enzyme content helps dissolve tumours. It is the faste, surest way to eliminate internal waste and provide an optimum nutritional environment. Wheatgrass juice is the nectar of rejuvenation, the plasma of youth, the blood of all life. The elements that are missing in your bodies cells – especially enzymes, vitamins, hormones and nucleic acids – can be obtained from this daily green sunlight transfusion.”
The Wheatgrass Regime
For the benefits of wheatgrass to be maximized, its consumption should be seen as part of a bigger program of health rejuvenation. This program should include the consumption of a predominantly raw organic diet (at least 70% where possible) comprising lots of lovely salads, sprouts, fruit, nuts, and seeds and supplemented by a small amount of cooked vegetables, sprouted pulses and grains. Regular meditation and moderate exercise make up the other two cornerstones of this regime.
Begin the consumption of wheatgrass juice by taking small amounts, perhaps 20-30ml per day, increasing to 150ml over time. The juice should be taken on an empty stomach, and a good 30-60 minutes should be allowed before consuming anything else. (On occasion longer will be needed – wait until any nausea and cleansing reactions have well passed).
How to choose a Wheatgrass Extractor
Many of the vital nutrients in wheatgrass juice quickly change from a liquid to gas form when exposed to air. Therefore the juice is best extracted using a juicer, which presses the juice from the grass. This counts out most commercial fruit and vegetable juicers. There are a number of suitable juicing machines on the market. These range from a cast-iron, hand-powered juicer available from Organic Energy for around $100, to the Oscar fruit and vegetable juicer – retails for around $650.
For the recovery of health by natural means you need a strong desire for vitality, a willingness to undergo healing crisis and knowledge of the basic principles of health.
Wheatgrass affected one person so much that he had a vision like this:
As the use of living grass becomes widespread it will reshape the health of society. Taverns will be replaced by juice bars, pharmacists will take up farming, the war industry will make peace buttons, drug manufactures will study the mystics, our politicians will become astrologers, doctors will push grass, hospitals will be converted to museums, and the lion and the lamb will rest side by side.
